San Cristóbal Totonicapán
San Cristóbal Totonicapán is a city in the Totonicapán Department in the southwest of the Central American Republic of Guatemala .
history
The city of San Cristóbal Totonicapán was founded around 1578 by the Spanish conquerors, the Conquistadors . The original name was San Cristóbal Paxulá or Pachulá . The quichen name is made up of the locative pa , as well as jul for hole and já for water or river, meaning the place at the waterfall . The conquerors met a large number of indigenous peoples, whose meeting is still celebrated every year on the anniversary of St. Christopher , on July 25th and 26th, with mask dances, the Baile de la Conquista .
geography
The city is located at an altitude of 2,330 meters above sea level about 12 km west of the capital of the department, Totonicapán . According to the 2010 census, there were 36,675 inhabitants in seven urban districts and the hamlet of Nueva Candelaria on an area of 36 km².
