San Félix is a small volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean . Together with the neighboring island of San Ambrosio , it belongs to the Desventuradas archipelago . The island was discovered by Juan Fernández in November 1574. Politically, it belongs to Chile and is administered from the city of Valparaíso . It has an area of ​​about 1.4 km² and in the Cerro Amarillo (also Cerro San Félix ) reaches a height of 193 m above sea level.

San Félix is ​​uninhabited, but there is a small military airfield ( ICAO code : SCFX) and a small station of the Chilean Navy.

San Félix are the islands of Islote González and Roca Catedral de Peterborough.

Islote González

Islote González is an inaccessible island with steep cliffs. It is located at 26 ° 19 ′  S , 80 ° 5 ′  W , 450 meters south of the southeastern tip of San Félix. González extends over a length of 800 meters in a north-south direction and is up to 400 meters wide. It has an area of ​​0.25 km² and reaches a height of 173 m in the southern area. It is connected to San Félix by an underwater reef that runs from the northern tip of the island to the southeastern tip of San Félix and is clearly visible on the satellite image.

Roca Catedral de Peterborough

Roca Catedral de Peterborough, shortly Roca Catedral is the largest of a group of steep, jagged rocks 2 km north-northwest of the Cerro Amarillo in the western part of San Félix, at 26 ° 16 '  S , 80 ° 7'  W . The rock reaches a height of 53 meters, with a diameter of just over 100 meters and a land area of ​​around one hectare (0.01 km²). An underwater sandbar, Rada San Felix (San Felix Road), connects Roca Catedral with Isla San Félix. At a distance of 500 to 800 meters from Roca Catedral, this sandbank is suitable as an anchorage at depths of 20 to 37 meters. The sea floor there consists of black volcanic sand.
