San Juan Evangelista Ante Portam Latinam (German: St. John in front of the Latin Gate) is a Roman Catholic church in Arroyo de la Encomienda in the province of the autonomous Spanish region of Castile and León .

history

The church was built in the 12th century by the Order of St. John in the Romanesque style. The order was able to establish itself in the region through the support of Queen Urraca . The church was built as a single-nave hall church with a short choir bay, which is connected to a semicircular apse in the east. In the south facade the church has a representative portal with rich architectural sculptures. The apse is also lavishly designed. A thorough restoration took place in the 19th century.
