Ruined building in Sanaigmore

Sanaigmore , also Sannaig , is a derelict town in the northwest of the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . Sanaigmore was located on Sanaigmore Bay about twenty kilometers north of Portnahaven and about eight miles northwest of Bowmore , the capital of the island, at the southwest end of the Ardnave peninsula . The nearest town was Braigo, two kilometers south . Sanaigmore was connected to the island's road network and is today's end point of the B8016 . At the 1841 census, Sanaigmore still had 145 people. Ten years later the population had already dropped to 75 people. Today only a former farm remains in the area of Sanaigmore, which houses a holiday home and an art gallery. A permanently inhabited building no longer exists. The foundations of various buildings have been preserved in the area.

Surroundings

There are numerous remains of previous settlement in the area around Sanaigmore. In the northwest of Sanaigmore Bay on a hill are the remains of a dun . It comprised an area of about 10 m × 8 m and was surrounded by a wall about three meters thick. The entrance was probably in the southwest. Traces of former dwellings were uncovered in the surrounding dunes, which could have been one or more abandoned villages. At a site on the west bank of the bay, numerous pottery shards, flint and human bones were uncovered at a shallow depth. Pottery shards and flint were also found on the east coast, but also a kettle, remains of mussels and the remains of field boundaries, which testify to an agricultural use of the area. A few hundred meters to the southwest, a bronze bracelet, probably from the early Middle Ages, was discovered.
