The Sanaigmore Bay , also Sanougmore Bay , is a bay on the northwest coast of the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located about 13 km northwest of Bridgend , 20 km north of Portnahaven and marks the beginning of the Ardnave peninsula . The closest village is the small settlement of Sanaigmore . At the entrance, the bay, which cuts about 250 m deep into the country, is 200 m wide. For the most part, there is a flat rocky coast at Sanaigmore Bay, but there are also sandy beach areas at the head.
Surroundings
The remains of a dun can be found on a hill in the northwest of the bay . It comprised an area of about 10 m × 8 m and was surrounded by a wall about three meters thick. The entrance was probably in the southwest. Traces of earlier settlement have been uncovered in the dunes around Sanaigmore Bay. It is not known whether this was one or more localities. At a site on the west bank of the bay, numerous pottery shards, flint and human bones were uncovered at a shallow depth. Pottery shards and flint were also found on the east coast, but also a kettle, remains of mussels and the remains of field boundaries, which testify to an agricultural use of the area. A few hundred meters to the southwest, a bronze bracelet, probably from the early Middle Ages, was discovered.
