The Sanatorium Lake is a small artificial lake in the Australian state of Victoria . It is located near the small town of Mount Macedon , about 57 kilometers northwest of the state capital Melbourne in the Macedon Regional Park , and is 941 meters above sea level. The lake is less than 100 meters long.

The lake was created in 1899 against the resistance of the local residents in order to supply water to a planned sanatorium in which tuberculosis patients should be treated. The facility only existed until 1910. A fire had badly damaged it.

The area around the lake is mainly characterized by evergreen deciduous forest with eucalyptus trees; the area is relatively sparsely populated with 18 people per square mile. The fauna includes approximately 150 species of native birds, as well as a wide variety of mammals, including kangaroos , wallabies, and wombats .

With a very attractive landscape, the Lake Sanatorium is used today primarily as a local recreation and hiking area. Some hiking trails equipped with information boards have also been created. It is also connected to other scenic highlights in the Mount Macedon Park, such as the 1011 meter high Camels Hump , the highest point in the Macedon Regional Park.
