Sandefjord Museum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sandefjordmuseene (official name Commander Christen Christensen's Whaling Museum , also called the Sandefjord Whaling Museum or Hvalfangstmuseet ) is a gift from Lars Christensen , a son of Christen Christensen , to the city of Sandefjord in Norway . It was opened in 1917 as one of the first dedicated museum buildings in Norway and was intended to provide information about the fauna of the then largely unknown Antarctic and the history of commercial whaling .

In 1981 the museum was significantly expanded. The focus today is on the exhibition of exhibits on the history of whaling as well as the ecology of whales and their habitat. The museum's photo collection contains around 150,000 photos, 30,000 of which are related to whaling. The museum's library in 1985 contained around 14,000 volumes, which have been available to the University of Oslo since a cooperation agreement in 1939 . In 2003 the library was split up and the volumes related to whaling and polar regions were added to the Sandefjord City Library. The museum archive is available to everyone.

The museum's holdings also include the restored whaling ship Southern Actor (built in 1950), which is moored in the harbor as a museum ship, and the Gaia , an ocean-going copy of the Gokstad ship .

The museum also hosts international conferences on whaling and whales.
