Sandemanians

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sandemanians , also known as glassists , were a small Christian community founded in Scotland by John Glas (* 1695, † 1773) and his son-in-law Robert Sandeman (* 1718, † 1771).

history

The Sandemanians formed churches based on the model of the New Testament early church. Church leadership was in the hands of teachers, elders, and a bishop . The main focus of the services was the celebration of the Lord's Supper, with washing the feet and a love meal with a brother kiss as integral components. In addition to the celebration of the Lord's Supper , the interpretation of the Scriptures was one of the services that lasted several hours on Sundays. The Sandemanians interpreted the Bible literally. The community financed itself through donations that were paid into the community treasury. Amusements such as gambling were forbidden. There were churches in England , Scotland, and the United States , most of which had no more than 100 members. With the death of the last elder in Edinburgh in 1999 , the community is considered extinct.
