The Sankt-Agnes-Stift in the Bonn district of Castell was an educational institution for girls in the 20th century. The building in Graurheindorfer Strasse 151 / 151a , completed in 1904, is a listed building. A nursing home of the Bonn care facility has been located here since 2011 .

history

At the end of the 19th century, an Agnes Association was founded in Bonn , the aim of which was to establish an educational and household institution to provide protection and help for "morally endangered women". The association solicited members and donations and carried out garden festivals from 1899 to build up assets. In 1902, a plot of land was acquired on what was then Rheindorfer Strasse . In 1904 the construction of the institution building was completed and the association became a foundation under the direction of nuns of the Paderborn-based congregation of the Sisters of Christian Love .

Known in Bonn as the “Home of the Fallen Girls”, the pen initially accepted 40 young girls. In 1914 there were already 120 schoolgirls living in the boarding school. They received religious instruction and from 1910 also propriety and arithmetic instruction. From 1917 the responsible Düsseldorf welfare authority paid the monastery care allowance of 1.15 marks per person per day. After buying washing machines, they did laundry for families in Bonn, thus generating additional income.

During the First World War , the laundry of twelve surrounding hospitals was washed in the monastery. After the war there were financial problems, as hardly any money could be earned from the cleaning business; Thanks to financial support from nuns from the United States, however, the institution was able to continue operating. In 1928 the offer was expanded to include a kindergarten. Home economics became the most important subject for girls aged 15 and over .

In the Third Reich , the institution was placed under the supervision of the authorities. The collegiate kindergarten was closed in 1939 and reopened in 1941 by the People's Welfare Association . Homeless families also found asylum in early 1945. The bombing raids in the winter of 1944 hardly damaged the building. After the war, training continued, and the dormitories were converted into living rooms and bedrooms in 1955. From 1957 housekeeper, ladies' and linen tailor, ironer, assistant cook and stenographer were trained. In 1990 only 45 girls lived in the institution, which was closed on July 31, 1996.

After a renovation, the Diakonie Michaelshoven operated a retirement home under the name of St. Agnes Domizil in the former institution building . After a decline in capacity utilization, operations had to be stopped in June 2009; At that time there were still 40 seniors living in the house. Pflegewerk Bonn gGmbH has maintained a senior citizens' home ( Haus St. Agnes ) here since 2011 with a total of 80 places, divided into 64 single and 8 double rooms. The restaurant is located in the former chapel of the monastery.
