history

The founding phase from 1950 to 1964

Pastor Erwin te Reh founded the association "Coenaculum - Christ Invites!" in Stephansheidein Rösrath. The foundation stone for the chapel was laid there in the same year. In the course of time the name of the association changed to "Diakonie Michaelshoven". After the Second World War, many refugees came to Cologne who found hardly any accommodation there. In 1954 the association therefore bought land in the south of Cologne. In the same year the Bodelschwingh house in Cologne-Mülheim was inaugurated. In 1955 the association laid the foundation stone for the first houses in Michaelshoven: House Ruth, Thomas House and House Andreas as well as the Archangel Michael Church and the rectory were built. Other buildings followed: in 1958 the Schwesternheimat house, in 1959 the Markus-Haus in Michaelshoven, dormitory for people with disabilities, in 1961 the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Haus, boarding school for pupils with physical disabilities and in 1963 the women’s dormitory Elisabeth-Fry-Haus. The Archangel Michael Church was consecrated in 1964.

Growth from 1965 to 1985

In 1965 the Diakonie built the Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar houses. In addition, the then Federal President Heinrich Lübke visited the campus and gave the Diakonie the sculpture of a bear that is still in the park today. In 1967 the Haus Israel nursing home was completed, which was renamed Haus Zacharias on the advice of the police after the Munich Olympic attack . In 1970 the Cologne Vocational Promotion Agency was set up and the first boarding school was also established. In 1971 the Diakonie took over the Katharina-von-Bora-Haus retirement home in Lindenthal. In 1974 the office for Diakonie was separated. The Michaelshoven parish was founded. In 1975 the largest old people's home for senior citizens in Cologne, Haus Simeon, was inaugurated. In the same year, the specialist seminar for geriatric care and the institute for massage and physiotherapy on campus were officially recognized. In 1979 Diakonie took over Haus Segenborn, a home for the homeless in Waldbröl, as the sponsor. In 1981 Pastor Dr. Erwin te Reh into retirement.

From an association to a diaconal company from 1990

In 1990 the foundation stone for the head office on Sürther Straße was laid and the offer expanded: in 1995 the hall for riding therapy on campus opened, and in 1996 outpatient care was founded. Between 1996 and 1999 the Diakonie Michaelshoven renovated many buildings, including the Simeon house, the Bodelschwingh house in Cologne and the Segenborn house in Waldbröl. From 2001 the structure of the company changed: From an association it became a social enterprise with a holding structure. Since then, the offers have been divided into business areas. The foundation was established in 2008. It promotes important offers that have not been paid for by the payers.
