The St. George's Cathedral ( Russian Свято-Георгиевский кафедральный собор , Ossetian Сыгъдӕг Георгийы кафедралон собор ) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in Vladikavkaz , the capital of the Russian Republic of North Ossetia-Alania . It was built from 1996 to 2003 on an old cemetery.

history

The construction of a new cathedral in the capital of North Ossetia-Alania was decided on August 30, 1991 by the Vladikavkaz City Council. This should be dedicated to Saint George . Construction began in an old cemetery on October 18, 1996.

In November 2001 the consecration of the bells was celebrated. The cathedral's largest bell, weighing 2.3 tons, was donated by a former mayor of the city of Vladikavkaz.

The first service was held on November 24, 2002 by Archpriest Vladimir Samoilenko. The building, whose style combines the traditions of Old Russian architecture with elements of Byzantine architecture , was completed in 2003.
