Saint Mary's Church (Harat ar-Rum)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Church of Saint Mary of Harat ar-Rum or al-Adhra-al-Mughitha Church ( Arabic كنيسة العذراء المغيثة, DMG Kanīsat al-ʿAḏrāʾ al-Muġīṯa ) is a Coptic Orthodox church on Harat ar-Rum Street in Cairo's Elghoureya near the St. Theodors Nunnery.

The church was used as the seat of the Coptic Orthodox Pope of Alexandria between 1660 and 1800 . This happened when Pope Matthias IV, on his first day as a Coptic Pope, moved the seat from the Church of the Virgin Mary near Haret Zuweila to the Church of St. Mary. It stayed there until 1800, when Pope Mark VIII moved it to the Coptic Saint Mark's Cathedral in Azbakeya .

It is also the burial place for some of the Coptic Popes. The Church of St. Mary in Harat ar-Rum had to be rebuilt several times, and in 1794 the Copt Ibrahim El-Gohary renovated the church, but it was burned down during the papal reign of Pope Mark VIII (1797-1809). Today the church should be renovated again.
