history

Opposite the upper village of Dzoragyugh and the old fortress of Yerevan , there was a hermit monastery on the left bank of the Hrasdan River since early Christian times, which included churches of Saints Sarkis, Gevork and Hakob, a school, an orchard and a fortress wall was surrounded. The Saint Sarkis Church was the seat of the Patriarch, while guests were accommodated in the monastery. Church and monastery were destroyed in a severe earthquake in 1679, but rebuilt under the Catholicos Edesatsi Nahabet (1691–1705). The current building, however, was built between 1835 and 1842.

Prelature of the Diocese of Ararat, built according to the plans of the architect Artsruni Galikyan

When Wasgen I was Catholicos of Etschmiadzin , the church was completely renovated based on a plan by the architect Raphael Sarkisowitsch Israelian from 1972. The facade was clad with rocks made of orange ani - tuff and provided with triangular niches. After Israelian's death on September 8, 1973, the work was continued under his partner, the architect Ardzroun Galikian . As part of this work, the interior of the church was also redesigned until 1976. In the eastern part of the church a gallery was built for the church choir . The old drum and dome were replaced by a much higher polyhedral, fan-like helmet . The church's bell tower was completed in 2000.

The expansion of Saint Sarkis Cathedral was financed by the Londoner Sarkis Kurkjian and his sons. In 2009 a photovoltaic system with 2 kW output was installed on the roof of the church .
