Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo ( 역도 요정 김복주 ) is a South Korean television series starring Lee Sung-kyung . It's a coming-of-age sports drama inspired by the life of Olympic gold medalist in weightlifting Jang Mi-ran . It was broadcast every Wednesday and Thursday at 10:00 p.m. from November 16, 2016 to January 11, 2017 on MBC.
The series was a commercial failure and received the lowest ratings in its air time. The series generated positive reactions from young viewers and gained popularity overseas, particularly in the Philippines.

Leading roles
Kim Bok-joo
A naturally gifted athletic runner with an ambitious yet calm personality. Growing up with her father, who was a retired weight lifter, she was inspired to do the same thing - lift weight, feel the dumbbells drop to the floor. She stands up for injustice and she is not your typical girlish girl, she still feels the shyness and awkwardness around boys but does not hesitate to beat them up when the time is needed but she hides her insecurities and fragile heart their strong outside.
Jung Joon-hyung
He is Kim Bok-joo's childhood friend when they were little in school. Kim Bok-Joo and himself did not know each other and did not remember, although she looked familiar to him, only until an incident brings the memories back to them. He is a talented swimmer with a playful personality. He suffered a trauma that began when he realized that the postcards allegedly sent to him by his mother were in fact from his aunt and uncle. Since this realization coincided with his first major international tournament, he was disqualified for a false start. He enjoys teasing Bok-joo and later falls in love. Jung Joon-hyung is played by Nam Joo-hyuk .
Jung Jae-yi
Jung Jae-yi is Joon-Hyung's cousin and older brother. A former athlete who becomes an obesity doctor due to an injury. His gentle and kind personality makes him the first man Bok-joo falls in love with.
Song Shi-ho
She is Bok-joo's roommate and Joon-hyung's ex-girlfriend. A top-class rhythm gymnast who won a silver medal at the Asian Games when she was eighteen . She likes to exaggerate and is constantly under stress from her developing figure, which leads her to break up with Joon-hyung.
