Saint Wolfgang's oak
The St. Wolfgang's oak should be according to legend, 1250 years old. It stands at the end of an avenue near Schloss Haus in Thalmassing (Neueglofsheim district), south of Regensburg . The bulging trunk of the pedunculate oak ( Quercus robur ), which in 1991 had a circumference of 9.60 meters at a height of one meter, appears very primeval. In 1998 the circumference of the trunk at the point of its smallest diameter (waist) was 8.50 meters. In 2009 the trunk was 1.4 meters high and 10.36 meters in circumference. In 1905 the trunk circumference of the oak was eight meters. An age of 400 to 500, or a maximum of 600 years, is therefore plausible.
The oak takes its name from St. Wolfgang , one of the first bishops of Regensburg, who is said to have preached under her crown 1,000 years ago.
