The Company Sanpaolo IMI SpA was up to its merger with Banca Intesa SpA a large credit bank in Italy with headquarters in Turin .
The company employed almost 44,000 people (2006). The bank had almost 3,200 branches in Italy and was also present in 34 countries around the world with 142 branches. The market capitalization was around 27.6 billion euros.
Sanpaolo IMI held the majority in Banca Fideuram .
On January 1, 2007, Sanpaolo IMI SpA was incorporated into Banca Intesa SpA. When the shares were swapped on January 2, 2007, Sanpaolo shareholders received 3,115 Intesa shares per share. The new company is called Intesa Sanpaolo SpA. This created the second largest credit institute in Italy .
Sanpaolo IMI was thus excluded from the FTSE MIB financial index as a listed company .
