The island of Sant'Erasmo (named after Erasmus of Antioch ) is the largest island in the Venice lagoon and is mainly used to supply the city of Venice with vegetables. The castraure di Sant'Erasmo , young artichokes, and the spareselle , green, very thin asparagus are famous .

The main town of San Erasmo Chiesa is located almost exactly in the middle of the island, on the side facing the lagoon. The island can be reached from Venice by public transport.

Since 2002, extensive renovation work has been carried out on the island, especially on the bank reinforcements that have become fragile. Lively residential construction also developed in the main town to stop the emigration of young people. Currently (2005) Sant'Erasmo has around 500 inhabitants, many of whom commute daily to Murano (glass factories) or Venice (tourism). For the 2001 census, 771 permanent residents were recorded on the 3.26 km² island, 253 of them in the capital of the same name (also called Sant'Erasmo Chiesa) and the rest in scattered residential buildings that cannot be assigned to any settlement. The vegetable fields are mainly irrigated via narrow channels - le barene - which are filled with the brackish water of the lagoon via a system of sluices .

From the first vaporetto -Station, Sant'erasmo Capannone, can be reached in a quarter-hour walk to the "Torre Massimiliano", an old gun turret of brick from the kuk -time while the Venice of Austria was governed. By means of the set up guns, enemy ships could be prevented from entering the lagoon. After years of decay, a group of investors has found themselves who have painstakingly restored the tower and transformed it into a culture and exhibition center.

At the northern tip of the island (Punta Vela) there are still remains of former fortifications and defenses, but they are slowly falling into disrepair. Some of the scattered houses are temporarily inhabited by dropouts and artists.

From Sant'Erasmo you can take private boats to the island of San Francesco del Deserto , on which there is a Franciscan monastery.
