The small Romanesque church of Sant Cugat de Gavadons is located in the area of the Catalan community ( Municipi ) Collsuspina in the province of Barcelona and is the in Catalonia popular hl. Cucuphas consecrated.

location

The church is located about 1040 m above sea level. d. M. at the viewpoint Turó de Bellver about 2.5 km (driving distance) north of Collsuspina.

history

The field name Gavadons is mentioned for the first time in a document from the year 948; 20 years later there is a mention of one dedicated to St. Cucuphas ( Sant Cugat ) church in the mountains ( serra ), which could have been a predecessor of today's church. Nothing is known about the founder or founders of the church in the 12th century. From the beginning, the building should have served as a parish church for the individual farmsteads in the vicinity; however, there was no town. When a priest's apartment was added later, the apse of the church was destroyed. In the 18th century, the original entrance on the south side was bricked up and a new one was created in the - otherwise unadorned - west facade.

architecture

The almost windowless building is made of rubble stones that were available in sufficient numbers in the area; only the corner stones are almost exactly carved. The outer walls are not stabilized by buttresses . A small bell gable ( espadanya ) rises above the left part of the west facade, but it was not erected until the 19th century, with a belfry behind , the rear window opening of which shows a horseshoe arch .
