Sant Jaume (Alcúdia)
Sant Jaume is a Catholic church in Alcúdia on the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca .
location
The church is located in the southeast of the old town of Alcúdia and is part of its city wall .
Architecture and history
The current church building was built between 1882 and 1893 on the site of a previous building in the neo-Gothic style . It is dedicated to Saint James . The previous church had previously collapsed due to dilapidation, with parts of the current church dating back to the 16th century. A first church building is said to have been built at this point as early as 1248.
Above the main portal of the church there is a figure of St. Jacob. The main altar of the church is Gothic and shows scenes from the life of the saint in relief. There is a 17th century Baroque side chapel. The chapel covered by a dome is a destination for local pilgrims . In this chapel, known as Sant Christ , is the crucifix Christ of Alcúdia, considered by believers to be miraculous . It is decorated with a silver crown and is said to have sweated blood and water in 1507 and thus ended a drought.
