Sant Martí de Solamal

Sant Martí de Solamal (also known as Sant Martí de Bianya ) is a small Romanesque church in the Catalan province of Girona in Spain . It is located near the hamlet of Sant Martí del Clot in the municipality of Vall de Bianya , which used to be called Solamal.

architecture

It is a heavily modified Romanesque church, the oldest surviving structure of which dates from the 12th century. The church was built as a single nave building with a semicircular apse. Subsequent structural changes completely destroyed the original structure of the church. The previous building was first mentioned in 979 when Count Miró II of Besalú, who was also Bishop of Girona , gave the church to the monastery of Camprodon .

The church is an important example of a single-nave Romanesque basilica, to which a transept was later added. In the 18th century, a square bell tower was integrated into the west facade above the entrance portal instead of the original bell wall. The semicircular apse is decorated with a surrounding console band.

Inside the church there is a baptismal font, which is decorated with four female heads.
