The Romanesque church of Sant Pere Despuig

The church of Sant Pere Despuig (also: Sant Pere del Puig ) is originally a Romanesque church in the hamlet of the same name in the municipality of " La Vall de Bianya " in the Catalan province of Girona in Spain , which has been structurally heavily modified over the centuries.

In 964, Bishop Arnulf of Girona inaugurated the new parish church of "Sant Pere Despuig". Today's church building dates back to the 12th century in its Romanesque origins. The outer walls of this church building are still preserved. In the 18th century the original orientation of this church was changed to a north-south orientation. Therefore there are only a few remains of the Romanesque church from the 12th century. Such remains can be found in the south-west corner of the church, where the bell tower stands. This itself was permanently rebuilt. The year 1782 is engraved on the lintel of the current entrance door in the south.

Until 1936 there was the “Mare de Déu de Gràcia” in the church, a seated Romanesque figure of the Mother of God. This got lost in the iconoclastic activities shortly before the beginning of the Spanish Civil War.

The name of the toponym and the church "Sant Pere Despuig" indicates the location, a small hill in the plain of Bianya.
