Frescoes in Santa Cristina

The Chiesa di Santa Cristina la Vetere is a Norman style church in Palermo .

As part of the coronation loggia at the cathedral, the Santa Cristina is one of the oldest churches in Palermo. Your entrance is in the Cortile di Pellegrini. In 1160, the town of Sepino ( Province of Campobasso ) donated the relics of Saint Christina of Bolsena to the Cathedral of Palermo, which had been abducted by pilgrims from the Bolsena catacomb in 1099 and brought to Sepino. The saint was made city patroness in Palermo. Archbishop Gualtiero Offamilio (Walter of the Mill) then ordered the construction of the church in 1171, which was looked after by the Cistercians after its completion . After the construction of the new cathedral was completed in 1185, Emperor Heinrich VI handed over the building . she to the cathedral chapter of Palermo. In 1569 the church was given to the "Association of the Holy Trinity" (Compagnia della Santissima Trinità), who built the Oratorio dei Pellegrini with a hospital to accommodate pilgrims in 1572. The buildings were later used by the Olivetans as a seminar building.

The interior with unplastered tufa masonry forms a Greek cross with a square crossing . Four mighty pillars support the cruciform dome. Three of the four cross arms are barrel vaulted and the lunettes of the apse are decorated with stucco . The only decorations on the bare masonry are frescoes with Peter and Paul , and red crosses cover the walls according to the ancient Greek rite.
