Franz Hillenkamp (born March 18, 1936 in Essen ; † August 22, 2014 in Münster in Westphalia ) was a German scientist in the field of physical chemistry and full professor who became known for his research on matrix-assisted laser desorption / ionization .

Life

Franz Hillenkamp studied at the Technical University of Munich , where he received his doctorate in 1966 on the subject of an absolute high-precision laser calorimeter . Until 1976 he was an employee of the GSF - Society for Radiation and Environmental Research , Munich. From 1976 he was a professor at the University of Frankfurt . In 1985 he and his colleagues coined the term MALDI for matrix-assisted laser desorption / ionization in mass spectrometry . In 1986 he was professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Münster , where he retired in 2001. From 2001 on, Hillenkamp was a full member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences . Franz Hillenkamp was married and had three sons. He died on August 22, 2014 at the age of 78 in Münster, Westphalia.

He has received numerous honors for his research. In 2003 he was awarded the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize and, with Michael Karas, the Fresenius Prize . In 2006 he received the Torbern Bergman Medal from the Swedish Chemical Society .
