from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Swedish Chemical Society (Swedish: Svenska Kemisamfundet , first Kemiska Samfundet i Stockholm , then Kemist-samfundet ) is a non-profit organization founded on November 22, 1883, with the aim of giving chemistry in Sweden a voice. It cooperates with various national and international organizations such as EuCheMS and IUPAC and publishes the membership magazine Kemisk Tidskrift , which has been printed by Vetenskapsmedia i Sverige AB since 2019 . The approximately 4,000 members are chemists and chemical engineers as well as chemistry teachers and students.

Berzelius days

The Swedish Chemical Society has been organizing the Berzelius Days since 1956 with the aim of giving Swedish high school students an insight into studying chemistry and the world of work of chemists . Around 350 students between 16 and 20 years of age take part in this event, which is held at Stockholm University . In addition to the Swedish students, students from Norway and Finland can also take part. The scholarships for this are funded by schools and companies in Sweden. National and international researchers from universities and industry give insights into their research, their everyday life and show the value of science teaching.

Nomenclature Committee

This committee deals with the special chemical nomenclature in Sweden, such as the Swedish names for new elements.

Chemical History Commission

This commission gives information and advice to all interested parties and gives lectures on the history of chemistry.

Awards

The Swedish Chemical Society awards the following awards and medals:

  • Norblad Ekstrand Medal
  • Oscar Carlson Medal
  • Arrhenius plaque: this was donated in 1960 in memory of Svante Arrhenius, a member of the Swedish Chemical Society since 1884. It is awarded annually to people who have carried out outstanding scientific research in the field of chemistry and its border sciences. Ragnar Ryhage first received it in 1962.
  • Gunnar Starck Medal
  • Torbern Bergman Medal: This medal was donated in 1967, on the 200th anniversary of the appointment of Torbern Bergman as Professor of Chemistry in Uppsala, to honor his work in expanding analytical chemistry in Sweden. The Torbern Bergman medal, during the analysis of days given to the analytical department of the company to those who rendered outstanding services in analytical chemistry. It was first presented to Gerold Schwarzenbach in 1967 .
