Santa Maria dei Miracoli

Santa Maria dei Miracoli is a Renaissance church in Palermo .

The church is located in Piazza Marina , where a miracle is said to have happened on May 10, 1543 during the procession of the city saint, Santa Cristina , in which a paralyzed man was able to walk again. After further miracles occurred, Viceroy Giovanni de Vega (1547–1557) laid the foundation stone for the church. The Senate of Palermo founded a brotherhood in 1599 and in 1629 the brothers established a novitiate. The facade, which was only completed in 1748, is structured by four pillars that merge into pilasters and support a wide beam , above which a deep round window. The upper facade area is closed off by a wave gable. The annex on the north side houses the relics of Santa Apollonia. The stucco work inside is attributed to Fazio Gaggini . Numerous votive tablets were placed on the walls.
