Santa Maria del Suffragio (L'Aquila)
The Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio , popularly commonly delle Anime Sante (the Holy Souls) , is an 18th century church in the city of L'Aquila .
Building
Construction began on October 10, 1713, ten years after the earthquake of 1703 , when it was decided to build a new seat for the Confraternita del Suffragio (Brotherhood of Intercession), as the previous building was badly damaged by the earthquake.
The building, the execution of which was entrusted to the architect Carlo Buratti , was completed after several construction phases. In 1770 Gianfrancesco Leomporri began to build the facade , while the dome was added in 1805 by Giuseppe Valadier .
The church, one of the most important monuments of the capital of Abruzzo, was badly damaged by the earthquake on April 6, 2009 and several aftershocks. The almost total collapse of the dome, which happened to be broadcast live on a RAI news broadcast, made her image a symbol of the earthquake and destruction of L'Aquila.

The organ goes back to an instrument that was built in 1897 by the organ builder Pacifico Inzoli. The instrument is currently being removed as it was damaged in the 2009 earthquake. The purely mechanical instrument has 14 registers , each divided into bass and treble sides. The tabs are located to the left and right of the console .
