Santuari de la Consolació

The pilgrimage church and hermitage Santuari de la Consolació is located in the municipality of Santanyí in the southeast of the Mediterranean island of Mallorca .

location

The Santuario de la Consolació is located on the Puig de Consolació at an altitude of 199 meters, about 5.5 kilometers northeast of Santanyí and about 2.5 kilometers northwest of s'Alqueria Blanca .

history

The exact date of construction is not known. The small church was first mentioned in a document in 1523. Individual components can be classified back in time.

hermitage

The hill is covered with pines, pines, oleanders, gorse and agaves. The pilgrimage church with the hermitage is located on the hilltop.

The exterior resembles a fortification system. The inner courtyard is accessed through the arched portal with the mostly open heavy wooden gate. On the left there is a well (or a cistern) made of sandstone. To the left a small gate leads to the rear outside of the monastery and to a large viewing platform. On the right a covered staircase leads up to the side and into the small church.

The simple church shows a figure of St. Scholastica , sister of St. Benedict from the 18th century, above the altar , who is venerated here as Mare de Déu de la Consolació (Mother of God who gives consolation).

The first Sunday in March is the Dia del santuari del Puig de Consolació (Chapel Day at Puig de Consolació).

Directions

Coming from Santanyí on the Ma-4012 road, shortly before Alqueria Blanca, the Camí de Sa Teulera branches off to the north and leads up a hill for about 500 meters. Halfway up a wall ends the journey. A footpath leads up about 200 steps to the monastery. On the east side of the hill there is also an isolated gravel road, but the bumpy driveway is only authorized.

Lookout point

From the square in front of the monastery there is a beautiful view down to s'Alqueria Blanca and the nearby coast. From the Puig de Consolació you have a wonderful panoramic view of the east, south and west coast of Mallorca. A small gate in the courtyard leads to the rear of the monastery. To the left to the west, a staircase leads down to a small viewing platform with a view of Santanyí and the Cap de Ses Salines. On a clear day you can see the island of Cabrera . If you go down the gravel road, you can see the Puig de Santueri and the Puig de Sant Salvador , as well as the nearby Puig Gros and Puig de sa Penya Bosca .
