The Saracen Fountain is a fountain in the Scottish city ​​of Glasgow . In 1992 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The fountain was built for the Glasgow International Exhibition , which was located in Kelvingrove Municipal Park in 1901 . The local Saracen Foundry ( Walter Macfarlane & Co ) took over the design and production . The fountain in Kelvingrove Park in the northwest of Glasgow was left until 1914. Then he was moved to his current location in Alexandra Park .

The Saracen Fountain stands at the southwest end of Alexandra Park in the eastern Glasgow district of Dennistoun . The basin of the cast iron fountain has a diameter of 11.5 m. The twelve-meter-high structure with its outstanding sculptural design is to be understood as an interpretation of the Lysikrates monument in Athens . Its plinth is lined with four cast iron seated sculptures. In the seated rotunda rests a Kleiner's pool. The manufacturer "Walter MacFarlane and Co, architectural sanitary and artistic, ironfounders, Saracen foundry, Glasgow" is shown on several boards along the fountain.
