The Dawit Sarajishvili Monument ( Georgian დავით სარაჯიშვილის ძეგლი ) is a well-known monument in the Georgian capital Tbilisi .

location

It is located on Griboedov Street 8-10 on the edge of Rike Park, about 150 meters north of Metekhi Church .

history

The memorial was designed by Gigo Gabashvili and has stood at the entrance to the “Dawit Sarajishvili Brandy Pavilion” since 1995. A cellar system for high-quality wines and spirits has been located on today's company premises since the end of the 19th century . On the part of the Georgian Orthodox Church there were concerns and protests against the monument opposite the Metekhi Church, as it honors an alcohol manufacturer.

Appearance

The monument is dedicated to the Georgian cognac manufacturer and philanthropist Dawit Sarajishvili . It shows the entrepreneur as an elegantly dressed elderly man with a document or plan in his right hand, he is standing on a pillar-like pedestal. In the background, on a retaining wall on the mountain slope above the company premises, there is the word DAVID in Latin letters as advertising.

Sarajishvili

Born on October 28, 1848 in Tbilisi, Sarajishvili completed his high school studies in St. Petersburg in 1866. This was followed by in-depth studies at the University of Munich and, in 1871, a doctorate in chemistry at the University of Heidelberg . Sarajishvili’s interests included the production and refinement of wines. For this purpose he went on several study trips to France. His goal was to learn the technical processes of the industrial production of cognac in France in order to be able to produce high-quality cognac and brandy in Georgia. In 1888, Sarajishvili dared to open a brandy factory based on local grapes and in just a few years became a self-made millionaire . His financial success with the Tbilisi Brandy Factory enabled him to appear as a sponsor for cultural and social projects. Sarajishvili died on June 20, 1911 in his hometown of Tbilisi. After his death, he and his later deceased wife were buried in a family crypt. In 1939 the city administration received the order to exhume the remains and to bury them in a distant place; this was done in silence. The memory of the population of their benefactor was preserved, however, so after the collapse of communist rule in Georgia, the monument was erected in honor of Sarajishvili and the city of Tbilisi proclaimed November 10th as the day of remembrance for Dawit Sarajishvili.

Surroundings

The area surrounding the monument, especially the Rike Park between the river and the old town, has been redesigned into a modern boulevard on behalf of the Georgian government and the city administration since the millennium ; new green spaces and streets as well as the Friedensbrücke, which is regarded as an architectural masterpiece, have already been built at the foot of the Georgian Presidential Palace.
