Sarah Kubitschek

Sarah Luísa Lemos de Oliveira Kubitschek (* 1909 in Belo Horizonte ; † February 4, 1996 in Brasília ) was the wife of Juscelino Kubitschek and during his tenure as President from January 1956 to January 1961 First Lady of Brazil . In this function, she actively campaigned for social issues.

Sarah Luísa Gomes de Sousa Lemos comes from a long-established family from Belo Horizonte. She was born as one of five children of Jaime Gomes de Sousa Lemos , Deputado Federal for the state of Minas Gerais , and his wife Luísa Negrão.

As a teenager she met Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira. When he went to Europe to deepen his knowledge in the field of urology , he broke the relationship and no longer answered her letters. At her mother's advice, she waited for him to return, after which they resumed their relationship. They married on December 30, 1931 in Rio de Janeiro, the celebration took place the following day at the Hotel Copacabana Palace . As a child first came eleven years later came Márcia born. Years later, the couple adopted Maria Estela , who is a year older than Márcia.

After her husband was elected President of the Republic of Brazil, Kubitschek began to campaign extensively for social issues. She was the founder of Organização das Pioneiras Sociais , which set up an aid organization in Minas Gerais, including the construction of school houses and day-care centers and the distribution of clothing, food, wheelchairs and technical aids for the physically handicapped. In addition, she founded outpatient hospitals and floating hospitals for the Amazon in more than half of the states.

After her husband's death, she lived on his pension in an apartment in the capital Brasília, where she died of cardiac arrest in early 1996 at the age of 87 .
