from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sareh I ( Simon Pajaslian , Armenian Զարեհ Ա Փայասլեան , born February 14, 1915 in Marasch , † February 18, 1963 in Antelias ) was from 1956 to 1963 " Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia " of the Armenian Apostolic Church .

During the forced exodus of the Armenians from Cilicia , the seven-year-old Simon fled with his parents to Aleppo , where he attended school. After studying for a year at the Jesuit College of Aleppo, he entered the newly founded seminary of the Catholic of Cilicia in Antelias in 1930 . In 1935 he was ordained a priest as a monk and from 1936 studied Oriental and Byzantine studies in Brussels . After brief teaching at the seminary of Antelias, he became vicar and prelate of the Archdiocese of Aleppo. In 1947 he was ordained bishop.

After a long vacancy , under difficult circumstances he was elected by a large majority to the Armenian Catholicos of Cilicia on February 20, 1956 . Catholicos Wasgen I of Echmiadzin had previously left the election meeting in protest. Sareh was consecrated late on September 2, 1956 by (only) two Armenian and one Syrian Orthodox bishops. Until his death, Sareh did not experience all Armenian recognition.

Sareh expanded the area of jurisdiction of the Catholic from Cilicia to Greece, Iran and as far as the USA, thereby intensifying the contrasts with the Catholic of Echmiadzin . Under him, the Cilician Catholic joined the World Council of Churches and sent observers to the 2nd Vatican Council of the Roman Catholic Church . Sadly, Sareh died of a heart attack when he was 48 years old.
