The Sarwajer ( Russian сарваер , also сарваэр , transliteration : Sarvaer) was a rank in the Imperial Russian Navy in the 18th century. The name is a transcription of the English surveyor . The rank of Sarwajer was introduced with the rank table of Peter I published on January 24, 1722 . In the ranking he was in VI. Class, the holder of this rank automatically belonged to the hereditary nobility. The Sarwajer's official duties included overseeing the construction of ships, the condition of the shipyards and the condition of the ships in the active fleet. The rank was equal to that of a captain 1st rank of the fleet or a colonel of the army .
