Sather Tower
The Sather Tower , also called Campanile based on its Venetian model ( Markus Tower ) , is the landmark of the University of California in Berkeley . Work on the structure, designed by architect John Galen Howard , was completed in 1914 and the tower was first opened to the public three years later . The Sather Tower was donated and paid for by Jane K. Sather, a patron of the university .
Visitor information
An elevator takes you to the visitor platform at a height of 61 meters. From there you have a view over the campus , the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge . The tower houses a carillon , which consists of 61 bells. On weekdays there is a bell concert at 7:50 a.m., noon and 6:00 p.m. The tower is open on weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The Sather Tower was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 25, 1982 as a monument .
