Eutelsat Americas (formerly Satmex , Satélites Mexicanos) is a Mexican operator of commercial communications satellites .

history

The company was created on June 26, 1997 through the privatization of the satellite sector of the state authority Telecomunicaciones de México (Telecomm). At that time Telecomm was operating four geostationary satellites Morelos 1 and Morelos 2 (both launched in 1985), as well as Solidaridad 1 and Solidaridad 2 (launched in 1993 and 1994, respectively). They supplied not only Mexico, but also other parts of Latin America and the southern United States.

The Morelos 3 satellite ordered from Hughes when Satmex was founded was renamed Satmex 5 and launched on December 6, 1998. It is in a geostationary position at 116.8 degrees West . Satmex 6 followed on May 27, 2006 at 109.2 ° West .

Satmex 7 was ordered from Boeing in 2012 together with ABS 2A and ABS 3A . The Satmex 8 satellite was launched on March 26, 2013.

Satmex has been part of the Eutelsat group since January 2, 2014 . With effect from March 7, 2014, Satmex changed its name to Eutelsat Americas. The name of the active satellites has been aligned with that of Eutelsat; of Satmex 7 is, for example Eutelsat 115 West B .

In 2015 Boeing built another satellite, which was eventually named Morelos-3 .
