Suction scale

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A suction scale is a hair in bromeliads that is used to absorb water. The uptake of water and the associated minerals through the suction scales on the leaves is important for the epiphytic bromeliads, as they cannot absorb these substances from the substrate. The term was coined by Gottlieb Haberlandt .

Similar structures also occur with Eriocaulaceae .
