Savana is a Mozambican , Portuguese-language weekly newspaper . It is published by the free media cooperative Mediacoop in Maputo and is one of the best-known national newspapers in the country.

Within the Mozambican media landscape, Savana mostly takes on a role critical of the government, for which journalists of the newspaper occasionally receive threats of violence. Critics claim that Savana is "too critical" and "too biased" of the government and that it does not play an objective role.

Savana was founded in 1993 by the journalist Carlos Cardoso , who was critical of the government , until he left the newspaper's editorial team in 1999 and founded his own newspaper ( Metical ).

The director of Savana is Francisco Lima , who received the CNN Multichoice African Journalist Award in the “Portuguese-language media” category for his work and reports .
