The Sava Bridge ( sr. Савски мост / Savski most) is a traffic and tram bridge in the Serbian capital Belgrade . In its function it is considered to be the smallest traffic bridge in Belgrade and connects the core of the Serbian capital over the Sava with the Novi Beograd district .
construction
The bridge is about 430 meters long, the longest span is 157 meters. It has one lane in each direction, which is also used by the tram . The tracks were laid in 1984 during the construction of the tram line to Block 45 in New Belgrade.
The Sava Bridge was built in 1942 by the German Wehrmacht during the occupation of Serbia in World War II, when the Alexander Bridge (see Brankov most ), the then only Belgrade road bridge over the Sava, was destroyed. On October 20, 1944, the Belgrade teacher Miladin Zarić was able to convince soldiers of the German Wehrmacht on their retreat not to blow up the bridge. The Sava Bridge has been rebuilt several times, most recently in 2007/2008 when it was expanded in its travel width.
Surname
The Germans initially called the bridge the Prinz-Eugen-Brücke ; the Belgrade people called it the German bridge (sr. nemački most ) long after the end of the Second World War . However, these names were forgotten, so that today the official name is the Sava Bridge. The common name of the Belgrade people, on the other hand, is the Old Sava Bridge, sr. stari savski most .
