Savonnette
The term savonnette (from the French “soap”, synonymous with spring lid watch , capsule watch ) describes a pocket watch whose dial is protected by a spring lid over the watch glass , which pops open at the push of a button.
In contrast to the open Lépine design , the seconds display is not in line with the crown and the winding shaft, but orthogonally at 6 o'clock , which makes handling and readability easier. This arrangement was later adopted for wristwatches . Due to the spring cover, the watch case has two bases (covers).
Savonnette is also the French word for toilet soap.
