Sayonara Player is a free audio player for Linux and BSD . It was developed by the German developer Lucio Carreras, written in C ++ and uses the Qt framework and the multimedia framework GStreamer .

features

installation

Sayonara can generally be installed under Linux with the distribution-specific package management . For some Linux distributions such as u. a. Ubuntu , Fedora and Arch Linux assistance.

surface

After installation, Sayonara has a graphical user interface which, in terms of structure and usability, is an intuitive alternative for Linux systems thanks to numerous analogies to the Windows players Winamp and Foobar2000 . The window can essentially be divided into the player itself - with operating elements, data on the track and the cover being shown - the playlist and the music collection. The presentation of the music collection is in parts comparable to the Winamp library, a table view of the artists and albums as well as an overview with cover preview is possible. Unlike some other music players, multiple playlists can be managed.

Database

In particular, large music collections that the player manages in one or more databases should be able to be managed without any problems, which is one of the developer's goals, namely to design an intuitive and easy-to-use player. In the test, the database reads 40,000 FLAC files faster than Winamp, but neglects information that goes beyond the usual scope of the standard tag fields . The search time is also slightly shorter with 40,000 FLAC files - results are displayed either as quickly as possible during entry or after confirmation with Enter.

Compared to other audio players

In contrast to the Guayadeque audio player , which achieved a very good average user rating at Sourceforge in 2014, development is being actively pursued. Only a few players support large-scale databases at high speed and can manage multiple playlists (the latter is not supported by Winamp, for example). In contrast to Audacious and Rhythmbox , the interface (especially the playlist management) and database are easier to use and yet are just as functional. A dark skin is included. In a direct database comparison with Winamp, it is noticeable that not all metadata is read in and statistical functions are missing. B. not shown which songs were played how often and when last. However, dynamic playlist creation is supported, where songs from similar artists or similar musical styles are automatically added. The integration of web services such as Internet streams and Last.fm scrobbling show that the audio player is not only limited to playing local files or purely offline use.

Range of functions

Some of the features of the player are:

  • Music playback with crossfader
  • Music database with search function, cover display and genre filter
  • Management of multiple databases
  • Manage multiple playlists
  • Last.fm Scrobbling: automatic addition to the playlist (so-called smart mode, i.e. additional songs are added automatically)
  • Access to web streams and podcasts
  • (automatic) cover display and support for integrated covers
  • Metadata editor
  • Equalizer
  • Frequency spectrum and level display
  • Display of lyrics (available from various web services)
  • Translations available for various languages

Comparisons, reviews and ratings

Abhishek Prakash on It's FOSS pointed out Sayonara Player as an alternative to Winamp in May 2018: "It is also a good player for those who miss Winamp under Linux because it is similar to the classic Winamp media player" (" It's also a good player for people who miss Winamp on Linux because it resembles the classic Winamp media player ").

In April 2019, Theis Klußmeier from Hamburg drew a comparison between 16 Linux audio players on blog.tice.de. The basis is a music collection of over 10,000 tracks. The Sayonara Player is highlighted as "well worth seeing" and the player is declared convincing.

Luke Baker published a ten-page review on the Sayonara Player on LinuxLinks in September 2019, in which u. a. the functions are presented with screenshots and brief instructions for installation are provided. In the summary it is stated: "The Sayonara Player is a jewel among the music players" (" Sayonara Player is a gem of a music player ").
