Rhythmbox is a free audio player that is one of the standard applications of many GNU / Linux distributions . It is for Gnome developed, but also in many other desktop environments - especially those who like Gnome on the GTK + - Toolkit based (such as Unity or Cinnamon ) - are used.
The development of Rhythmbox began in 2001 and was heavily inspired by iTunes , which was released in the same year : it functions, like this, as a player and at the same time as a database for organizing and cataloging music collections.
Functions
Rhythmbox has a plug-in interface with which the required functions can be added or those that are not required can be removed; some of those mentioned in the following are implemented via standard installed extensions. A list of several other third-party plugins can be found on the project's official website.
At the moment Rhythmbox ( out of the box ) offers the following functions:
- Playback of many audio formats : Rhythmbox accesses the GStreamer - Framework back and is therefore capable of a very wide range of audio and container formats to read - provided the necessary GStreamer plugins installed in the system
- Playback and ribs and - after activating the plugin audio CD recorder - burning of audio CDs
- Control of FM tuners such as part of a TV card for FM radio reception (plug-in FM radio )
- Reception of Internet radio stations
- Subscription to podcasts , browsing the podcast directories of the Miro Guide and the iTunes Store
- Searching and playing tracks on SoundCloud (Plugin SoundCloud )
- Playing and buying music from the Magnatune label (plug-in Magnatune music store )
- Scrobbling , i.e. transmission of track information, to Libre.fm or Last.fm (plug-in Last.fm )
- Provision of audio files and access to distributed audio files in the local network via the Digital Audio Access Protocol (plug-in DAAP music distribution )
- Transferring audio files to and playing tracks on MTP devices such as B. Android smartphones (plug-in portable playback devices - MTP ) as well as iPods and iPhones (plug-in portable playback devices - iPod )
- Creation of static and dynamic playlists
- Display and - after activating the search album cover plugin - loading album covers from the Internet
- Display and loading of lyrics from the Internet (plugin lyrics )
- Editing of the metadata of audio files
- Uninterrupted playback of audio files as well as crossfading with configurable fade length
- Use of automated replay gain volume normalization (plugin ReplayGain )
- Sending selected titles by email ( Send title plugin )
- Control of the player via a web browser (plug-in web remote control ) or via infrared remote control (plug-in LIRC )
- Output of the currently played title as user status in Empathy and Pidgin (plugin instant message status )
