Empathy ( english for empathy , empathy ) is a free instant messaging - client . In addition, it is a GUI toolkit with a number of reusable user interface elements for implementing instant messaging functionalities in programs. Empathy is being developed as part of the Telepathy project. It is the official instant messaging client of the Gnome project.

Functions

As a toolkit, Empathy offers elements for editing user accounts, contact lists, private and group chats, viewing call logs and a number of other functions. It builds on GTK + and integrates with Nokia's account management system Mission Control and system services such as NetworkManager .

As part of the reference implementation of the telepathy specified by freedesktop.org , it represents the client, which essentially consists of the libempathy program library . It uses the Gossip user interface and other parts of the Telepathy reference implementation, the connection managers, to communicate with various instant messaging networks. With Empathy, no form of advanced end-to-end encryption is possible, as is possible with many other messengers using Off-the-Record Messaging (OTR). In contrast, along with Pidgin , Gajim and Jitsi, it is one of the few clients that supports video and audio chat via the XMPP protocol.

Empathy replaced the messenger client Pidgin as the standard IM program in Ubuntu 9.10 (Pidgin is still packaged for Ubuntu and can be installed later via the package sources).
