GG (formerly Gadu-Gadu , Polish for “Laber-Laber” or “Plauschen”) is a commercial instant messaging service . With over 5.4 million daily active users, it was the most widespread online service for instant messages in Poland until 2012 , but has lost its popularity in its home market since 2016 due to the increasing success of Skype and Facebook .

As with ICQ , for example, users are identified using serial numbers. The official version of the program is quite slim, but can be expanded with numerous available add-ons . PowerGG is a complete package . Alternatives to the official client are Konnekt , Miranda IM , Miranda NG , AQQ , Pidgin , Kopete , Adium and others, which are supplied with a GG plug-in .

The official version supports instant messaging (with over 190 smileys ), offline messages, data transmission and IP telephony . There is also the option of a secure connection via SSL . From version 7 the program also has the function of video communication. The program, which can be used free of charge, displays advertisements while it is being used .

Trivia

GG is the first instant messenger worldwide that was used for a public connection to space, to earth orbit. It was a connection between Polish GG users and the astronauts of the International Space Station , which was established on the 30th anniversary of the first space flight of a Pole , Mirosław Hermaszewski .
