Miranda IM (mostly just "Miranda") is a free instant messenger for Windows for various protocols. The former SourceForge project name was "Miranda-ICQ", but since the project now supports many other protocols in addition to ICQ , the name was changed in 2003. Since the official website miranda-im.org 2020 was no longer available for several weeks and has now been redirected to a domain speculator, it can be assumed that the development will cease.
Functions
The program is inherently simple in its appearance and therefore has a lower demand on resources than many other instant messenger clients . Miranda IM already supplies plug-ins for common protocols ( AOL Instant Messenger , Gadu-Gadu , ICQ , IRC , XMPP , MSN , Yahoo Messenger ) in its standard version , and the homepage also has over 350 optional plug-ins and more Retrofitting protocols or functions. In the vast majority of cases, they are programmed by third parties. To make it easier to get started with the modular software, some private individuals offer unofficial “complete packages” from Miranda IM, which have selected plug-ins and configurations that are not available in the standard version.
In addition to the versatility provided by the plug-ins, Miranda IM can be translated into a variety of languages through language files. Many plug-ins also use this option, so that Miranda IM - if desired - works almost entirely in German.
development
The development of Miranda IM is always divided into three main versions. It is a stable (currently 0.10.x), a beta and an alpha version . The further development of the stable version focuses on bug fixes and minor optimizations, while new functions and major changes are incorporated into the alpha versions. In addition to the standard plug-ins, the alpha versions also contain additional contact list and message window extensions. These allow, for example, the adaptation of the contact list using skins .
Each version has both an ANSI and a Unicode variant, which means that Miranda IM works on all Windows versions from Windows 95 up to version 0.8.27 , later from Windows 98 onwards . Furthermore, with the alpha version 0.9.x, a 64-bit variant was added to the development branch and the code was changed ignorantly so that the messenger in the ANSI version no longer works with Windows 95. With regard to third-party plug-ins, the user must ensure compatibility in all cases.
In summer 2012, Miranda NG was a fork of Miranda IM, which most of the former Miranda IM developers are now contributing to its development. Disagreements between the main developers were cited as the reason for the split.
Since the official website miranda-im.org 2020 was no longer available for several weeks and has now been redirected to a domain speculator, it can be assumed that the development will cease.
Linux and other operating systems
Miranda IM is not platform-independent software, it was written solely for Windows. Although there have been porting attempts by independent programmers in the past , they were all aborted with poor results.
In the meantime, however, the standard installation of Miranda IM is officially described as usable under the Wine runtime environment . The developers expressed interest in further promoting compatibility with Wine from their side.
