Kopete is a free instant messenger for various protocols. The program is part of the KDE Software Compilation 4 . The name is derived from the Chilean word copete and means something like "alcoholic beverages" . The central communication component KDE Telepathy is the designated successor within KDE.

particularities

Kopete supports the popular instant messaging protocols XMPP / Jabber ( Google Talk , Nokia OVI, Facebook Chat, ...), OSCAR ( AIM , ICQ ), MSNP ( MSN ) and YMP ( Yahoo! ). He also supports Gadu-Gadu , Novell GroupWise , Lotus Sametime and SMS .

Several profiles of the same protocol can also be used. It is also possible to combine different profiles of other users under one meta name. Likewise, the profile of the Kopete user can be summarized under an overall profile.

From version 0.11 there is also the possibility of using webcams . This is currently supported by the Yahoo! and MSN.

From version 0.12 experimental support for the XMPP audio extension Jingle is available. Furthermore, the theme technology of the chat window has been replaced by an Adium- compatible technology in this version . The change makes it possible to use the same themes under both programs.

From version 0.50 Kopete is based on KDE 4, offers an improved user interface and supports file transfers using ICQ and AIM.

Encrypted conversations via off-the-record messaging are also possible with Kopete using a module supplied . Another module that is included enables encryption using the OpenPGP standard, which, however, is not contestable and has no consequences (if the private key is revealed).
