Jamendo is an online music service for the publication of GEMA-free music . Musicians can publish their songs there under one of the Creative Commons licenses. This allows the user to stream and download this music for personal use for free . Which of the offered songs is not free music and therefore not commercially free to use and, by analogy with semi-free software, only semi-free music can only be clarified upon explicit request.

history

Jamendo (a word created from jam and crescendo according to an earlier version of the website ) was officially launched in June 2005. The platform is developed and operated by the company Jamendo SA based in Luxembourg . After the start, jamendo was first of all better known in French-speaking countries; For example, Jamendo representatives were invited to the French Ministry of the Interior for consultations. In Germany, too, awareness grew, among other things after reports in various blogs and various media. In July 2007, Jamendo announced that Mangrove Capital Partners , one of the early venture capitalists for Skype , had invested in the company.

In January 2010 the media platform was on the verge of insolvency. Jamendo generated EUR 300,000 from 2300 customers with the PRO shop in 2009 , but was unable to agree on follow-up financing with Mangrove Capital Partners. On February 17th, the founder of the site, Sylvain Zimmer, announced that Jamendo had found a new partner and would also try more to build on the large community in the future. Jamendo has been bought by Musicmatic .

Since the platform was launched, both the number of users and the number of albums available have risen continuously. In 2010, Jamendo said it had 800,000 users who could access a repertoire of more than 35,000 albums by over 19,000 musicians.

concept

From the beginning, jamendo was based on free music. Musicians can choose between the various Creative Commons licenses and the Free Art license . Complete albums are uploaded, which are activated after an examination (especially to prevent copyright infringement). Albums can be categorized, rated and reviewed by users. You can also donate to artists. The website also offers other online community functions, which require free registration.

Initially, the website offered the option of streaming the music tracks directly and downloading them using the BitTorrent or eDonkey2000 file-sharing networks . The latter was replaced over time by a direct download function on the website. Furthermore, an interface is offered through which programs can directly access Jamendo; this z. B. by Amarok , Clementine , Rhythmbox or Banshee . There are separate program tools for jamendo, the so-called “jamendo tools”. These tools include the jamplayer for playback and the jamcorder and jamloader for uploading new albums.

Business model

Jamendo was financed through advertising on the website, among other things, until December 2010. The download archives with the music, on the other hand, are free of advertising. Fans have the option to donate to specific artists directly through the Jamendo website. The processing for the artists is limited to PayPal , payment takes place with a sum of 100 euros or (on request) every 3 months.

At the beginning of 2009, Jamendo PRO started , which allows the licensing of music for commercial purposes, in addition to the existing Creative Commons licenses. Artists participating in this program must confirm that they are not members of a collecting society . Jamendo provides licensees with extended commercial usage rights and a certificate that confirms that they have the usage rights to the music and that no further fees, for example from GEMA , are due (see GEMA assumption ). Jamendo guarantees that the participating artists receive at least 50% of the income. In the case of Creative Commons licenses that do not contain a non- commercial clause (e.g. "Attribution ShareAlike") and thus already permit commercial use, the added value for the music user in the presentation of jamendo is primarily the above Certificate and a license that "legally impeccable" guarantees "that [the] commercial use of the music [...] will not result in any claims from collecting societies [...]".
