Banshee (named after an Irish banshee ) is a platform-independent media player . It is distributed under the MIT license and is therefore free software . Development is primarily focused on Unix-like operating systems , but there are now experimental ports for Windows and macOS .

Banshee can be found in the package sources of many Linux distributions . From version 11.04 it was the standard software for media playback under Ubuntu , but it was already replaced with version 12.04.

technology

The software is in C # programmed and further based on the mono - runtime environment and GTK + for the graphical user interface. GStreamer is used as the back-end for decoding ; SQLite is used as the database for cataloging the audio and video files .

history

The first release on February 17, 2005 (version 0.1) was called "Sonance". Version 0.8.2 from August 4th had the current name. Version 1.0 was released on June 5, 2008, for which the software was written from scratch.

From version 1.4 of November 10, 2008, Banshee can also be compiled for Windows operating systems.

In version 11.04 of the popular Linux distribution Ubuntu scheduled for completion in April 2011, Banshee replaced Rhythmbox (the actual standard of the Gnome working environment ) as the standard audio player . In Ubuntu 12.04, however, Rhythmbox became the default player again.

Over 140 developers, 111 translators and six graphic designers have now worked on the project initiated by Aaron Backover. There are various descendants such as " Helix Banshee"; Due to the lack of a copyleft condition in the license used, it is also proprietary such as "Moovida".

The last stable release was in February 2014. On November 19, 2018, Banshee was removed from the unstable branch of Debian because it is no longer maintained by the developers and depends on outdated GNOME libraries. Debian is u. a. the basis for Ubuntu , so the latter will probably also appear without Banshee in the future.

Range of functions

An integrated tag editor is available for organizing your own media collection and the option of automatically renaming files according to the metadata . The user can rate elements of his collection so that these are preferred to less popular elements in "intelligent playlists". Songs can be analyzed for their speed , whereupon the auto-DJ function in random mode strings together similar-sounding songs and thus maintains a relatively constant musical mood. Banshee also masters other functions such as the automatic reloading of covers from the Internet, fine-tuning the acoustics using an equalizer or subscribing to podcasts . Various functions are implemented as plug-ins so that the user can completely remove program parts that are not required.

Particular attention is paid to compatibility with hardware media players such as Apple iPod , Zen and Android devices. Banshee supports the individual protocols of the devices.
