A tag editor (or tagger ) is a software that editing primarily metadata ( tags ) in multimedia - file formats allowed, instead of changing the actual content of the file. These are mainly taggers for the tagging systems commonly used with common audio formats such as ID3 , MP4 , APE and Vorbis comments , but they can also be taggers for JPEG or TIFF metadata.

A common area of ​​application of a tag editor is to correct the metadata of multimedia files and to sort the files according to this order in the file system. Advanced taggers are platform-independent and allow batch processing to automatically process multiple files.

Many programs such as media players , audio applications and the like also support the editing of (audio) tags. Usually, however, the term only refers to pure tag editor programs.

With the emergence of Internet communities like last.fm , the importance of correct information in multimedia files increases. In order to make it easier for users to add information to their files or to correct them, there is now a wide range of taggers that obtain this information online, for example from Internet databases such as MusicBrainz .
