The Miro Media Player (formerly DTV or Democracy Player ) is a free P2PTV program developed by the Participatory Culture Foundation . It can automatically download videos from subscribed channels, thus functioning as a video podcast reader. The Miro Media Player runs on different platforms (e.g. on Mac , Windows , GNU / Linux ), is free software and uses a feed reader and a BitTorrent client based on libtorrent . To play the media files under Windows and GNU / Linux he uses VLC or xine , whereby under GNU / Linux GStreamer is also possible. On the other hand, Mac OS X uses QuickTime . Miro was programmed primarily in Python .

Miro allows you to search for videos from nine video portals. The search hits are displayed as a list, each with an image and a one to five line description and can be clicked to download if desired. In the case of relevant hits with selective search term combinations, such a search can be saved as a channel ("Channel") so that new videos that result in the future with the given search terms can be automatically or manually obtained as with any "real TV channel" without running the search again and with the old hits.

The Miro Guide lists 7441 free channels (as of October 2009) in various categories.

Miro is one of the few playback programs that offers the option of downloading podcasts using the Bit torrent process.

With version 4.0, Miro offers not only a revised interface but also the integration of the amazon MP3 store and Google Play store .

Malware

Miro installs malware without permission. The developers admit to finance themselves with it: "This is one of the primary ways we fund continued Miro development."
