The Scaritinae are a subfamily of the ground beetles (Carabidae), but they are probably not monophyletic . There are 226 species and subspecies in Europe.
features
The small to very large beetles always have a strong constriction between the pro- and mesothorax . Their body is clearly flattened, such as in the genus Scarites or almost cylindrical in shape, such as in the genus Dyschirius .
The morphology of the larvae is very different depending on the tribe and sub-tribus, which suggests polyphyly . However , the larvae of several Untertribus and the Salcediini tribe are unknown.
Way of life
The beetles dig in the earth and in sandy ground.
Systematics and distribution
The subfamily is distributed worldwide, but the focus of distribution is in the southern hemisphere. The tribe Promecognathini with five genera is common in southernmost Africa and the northwest of North America, the tribe Salcediini is common with three genera worldwide.
