Schöche steam car No. 1

The Schöche steam car No. 1 is the oldest known and preserved automobile from Saxony .

history

Gustav Adolf Schöche (* 1856 in Dresden ) has been running his father's forge in Dresden's Neustadt since 1880 . From 1885 he manufactured various bicycle models in the first Velocipede factory in Dresden . In addition, he also dealt with the construction of steam boilers and steam engines . In 1895 he presented his first automobile, the Schöche steam car No. 1. The construction and development costs of the steam car came to around 125,000 marks .

Schöche used the steam car until 1910. On the occasion of a special show on the subject of 50 years of automobile construction , the vehicle was shown at the 1936 automobile exhibition in Berlin. Schöche then donated the car to the German Museum in Munich, where it was kept in the depot. The Dresden Transport Museum in 2011 was awarded the steam car no. 1 as a loan from the Munich museum, it is in the permanent exhibition of way presented.

Look under the car

The shape of the Schöche steam wagon is based on that of a carriage. The steam engine is under the seats, the two petroleum- powered steam boilers are installed in the front. A chain transfers the power to the rear axle. The boiler preheat time was around eight minutes, and a petroleum gasifier developed by Schöche was used. The maximum speed was given as that of a tram at the time, and Schöches said that one tank of petroleum was enough for about half a day.
